Detective Inspector Olivia Hardy and Detective Sergeant Lauren Groves are dispatched to investigate, triggering a major investigation which ends up with Hardy being usurped as Senior Investigating Officer. It's yet another problem for Hardy, as she already suspects that husband Hal is having an affair. Meanwhile, as Groves descends into alcoholism after her husband's desertion, both officers' lives seem to be spiralling out of control. When a baby's body is found at the back of the police station, Hardy takes the unpleasant case, determined to succeed and show the world she's still capable - but things don't turn out exactly as planned.

Note: This novel introduces us to DI Olivia Hardy, a firm but fair cop, and her new partner, DS Lauren Groves. Their wildly different backgrounds and styles of policing cause problems at first, but the two women bond over a shared love of music, and over the pressures of juggling complicated family lives with the horrors of the job. Both women try to reconcile their problematic family lives - Olivia's issues with her teenage children, Lauren's collapsing marriage - with the demands of a job that requires heart and soul.

Note: There is mischief afoot in the village of Fallow Fold. Persons unknown have been on a spree of vandalism, scratching cars, smashing colourful pots of flowers in full bloom, breaking greenhouse windows - and defiling a front door with a racist word, written in spray paint. The police are called, and given the unavailability of more junior personnel DI Harry Falconer and DS 'Davey' Carmichael arrive to investigate, but there are no obvious suspects. Then a resident is attacked as he keeps a nocturnal vigil, hoping to catch whoever is responsible for the vandalism. Soon, there is a surfeit of uncharacteristic behaviour from those who live there, and Falconer begins to suspect that there is more to come.

Note: Standard print edition originally published: Abercynon: Accent Press, 2014 The villagers of Stoney Cross were bustling about like hyperactive ants. In gardens, houses, and the village hall, figures flitted to and fro, making last-minute preparations for their 'Great Event': the first Stoney Cross Arts Festival, which was due to commence on Saturday. The enlisting of a local radio presenter to advertise then review their efforts had added an extra frisson of excitement. But the delight soon turns to dismay when the broadcaster, Marcus Willoughby, actually moves into a house in Stoney Cross the day before the Festival.

Note: Reverend Florrie Feldman has put the unpleasantness of her old parish behind her and made a fresh start in the sleepy little village of Ford Hollow, a community at peace - on the surface. Underneath the calm facade the usual rivalries and petty jealous are simmering. There is also a deep undercurrent of resentment towards a company which plans to build a new housing estate, altering the ancient landscape irrevocably.

Note: In the quiet village of Steynham St Michael there is an anonymous letter writer at work, jabbing and stabbing at the past's Achilles' heels of many of the upright citizens living there. After one resident is driven to extreme measures to escape exposure, another is driven to murder. In the village cards club, which meets once a week, tongues begin to wag, not only about the identities of the murderer and the poison pen letter-writer, but also about who exactly has received a letter. There are also changes afoot at Market Darley Police Headquarters, as the national economy dictates that it accepts the straitened circumstances planned for it, and complies with recommendations for change. And before any of this even happens, Harry Falconer drifts up from unconsciousness to find himself in complete darkness and barely able to move, the only sound being that of someone moaning in pain.

Note: Lady Amanda Golightly receives an invitation to spend Burns' Night with friends in Scotland. Although she is dismissive of the idea, her chum Hugo is thrilled at the thought and persuades her to agree to the trip. With Beauchamp, her long-suffering manservant, and her friend, Enid Tweedie, the four head to Rumdrummond Castle for a 'wee break'. Before long, however, murder enters their lives once more, and they begin to suspect some very dirty dealing is going on under the under the respectable veneer of castle life. Bagpipes, haggis, tartan, and kilts all make their appearance, as dastardly deeds are done amidst a snowy landscape.
